Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School (PMHSS) is a renowned private school in the southern suburbs of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The school is recognized by the State Government of Tamil Nadu and is affiliated to the Matriculation System of Tamil Nadu up to Standard 10 and the Tamil Nadu State Board for Standards 11 and 12. Founded in 1978 by Dr. K. Vasudevan, the current Principal and Correspondent, PMHSS is well known for achieving state ranks in Standard 10 and 12 public examinations consistently.[1][2] The high academic standards of this institution is further underlined by the number of its students enrolling in prestigious professional institutions like the College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology, Madras Medical College, to name a few. There are around 3000 students in the school with classes 9th to 12th having the maximum - around 350 students each.

The management of the school organizes a students' exhibition called the Students Science, Arts and Crafts Exhibition once in 4 years. This is an extravaganza with active participation from students, parents and the teachers. An outlet that demonstrates the creative strengths of its students, SAC opens with a procession of students and faculty on the streets of Madipakkam, followed by three days of exhibition in the Madipakkam school premises. Students' projects are judged under various categories: technical depth, creativity and presentation. The event ends with the formal prize distribution ceremony on the third day of SAC. The school annually conducts sports competitions in the areas of athletics and volleyball. Like many other schools in the city, the Annual Day is celebrated with much fanfare at the end of each academic year. This event is marked by stage performances by students including fancy dress competitions, drama, dance and music. The culturals are followed by the prize giving ceremony. Students who excelled in Standard 10 and 12 board examinations, academics and sports throughout the year are felicitated here. The school has very poor extra-curricular facilities and never participates in inter-school competitions and tournaments.
Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School (PMHSS) is widely the first choice for parents in the region of Madipakkam, Nanganallur and Velachery looking to obtain school admission for their wards. This, understandably, is a direct consequence of the academic results the school produces. Notwithstanding, perhaps directly connected to, its academic success, PMHSS is under constant criticism from neutral observers for some of its policies, such as—a more than normal class-work and home-work demands across the standards; rigorous implementation of attendance rules; severe, sometimes corporal, penalties for 'underperformance' in school examinations followed by a rigorous regimen of special classes to improve performance (particularly in standards 10-12); relatively negligible focus on sports/extra-curricular activities, to name a few. Even the Parents of students are not spared from the ire of the hard faced school principal, who treats them in a very shabby manner. Absenting from school without prior permission is treated as great offense. Parents usually lineup before the Principal room seeking leave for their wards. It seems, many students feel Psychologically bogged down due to the strict regimen followed by the school. Some Parents expressed happiness for the strictness followed by the school as their main agenda is to score very high marks in the Board Exams, notwithstanding the fact the Students are put into great sufferings. Several students feel that they are merely treated as mark scoring machines and not as human beings. Such criticisms are uncommon towards many other schools in the region and across the city. But, the unmatched scholastic reputation of PMHSS naturally draws attention to the issues within. It should also be noted that the school admits only creamy layer students who score very high marks in their 10th Board Exams for their Higher Secondary Classes. Scholars opined that with such top rank students only being given admission, there is no wonder such students excel in rank in the Board Exams. The students here mostly get only theoretical knowledge about the subjects and that is the reason why most of them fail in entrance exams such as IIT-JEE and AIEEE that test their depth in the subjects.
PMHSS was originally started in Nanganallur on June 12, 1978, and subsequently a branch was opened in Madipakkam, both of which are well-known suburbs in southern Chennai. The school at Nanganallur is the Head Office. The school building consists of an ANNEX, the higher secondary block, the lower primary block and another large plot used as the playground as well as the school's parking lot. The school literally covers about a quarter of the land that's available on the college road it's located on.
